Wednesday Weevils #1 : Really Salty Slugs

Everyone’s doing it.

Yep, everyone is dedicating a day during the week to blog about one thing in particular. Mari’s got Stoopid Saturday’s and Joana’s got FAnime Friday’s. And all the other cool kids have theirs too…

So now it’s my turn.

May I present to you Wednesday Weevils! Hurrah!

So, why Wednesday? Well,

  • I was due writing a blog post anyway, so might as well be Wednesday.
  • I’ve wanted to do this type of thing for ages now.
  • I like Wednesday’s. Sort of.
  • Was going to do a Sunday something, but thought the web could do with some entertainment mid-week.

And uh, weevils?

  • I think weevil is such a strange and funny word.
  • I don’t really know what weevils are, but I sure don’t like finding them in my flour and sugar!
  • Because it is such a strange word, I can make it mean whatever I want it to. I am wholesomely powerful you know…

So, tah dah. Wednesday Weevils! My weekly outlet into web wonderings…

Er, what?

Basically, there’s a lot of things I think about web-wise, like many blog/website owners, but I generally don’t build on these thoughts, which to me seems a waste of good brain cell usage.

So no more! These Wednesday Weevils will allow me to explore and poke these thoughts, and share the end result with you!

Amazing!

Let’s get to it Chuck…

This week’s weevil is the problem with staying updated with my favourite websites. As my lack of blogging shows, I’ve been without enough time to assert my web-presence, but to also even at least visit the website’s of those I secretly admire…

So I’ve been looking for a solution.

And really salty slugs may be an answer! Although, a salty slug, doesn’t tend to be a slug. It tends to be a dead, warped somewhat slimy thing. So, I’m not actually on about really salty slugs at all.

No no no. I’m on about RSS!

I never really understood what the whole poofyness was about RSS until I started using WordPress properly. For those who just don’t know, it means Really Simple Syndication.

It’s a one stop shop for keeping up to date with sites that produce a RSS feed. All WordPress powered ones do, and generally those powered by super-tron blogging platforms do too.

So what do you do? Subscribe to a site’s feed and voila.

Voila what? Well… you have a feed in your bookmarks… and you can get things (plugins/RSS feeders/poofy lions) to read these feeds for you and show you just what the feeds say.

Which should be the site’s recent updates (blog posts in most cases).

Woot! You no longer have to visit the website to see if it’s updated! Just check a magic bookmark and you can know instantly! Wowzar!

Now, if you are like me, which you (hopefully) aren’t, then, even this isn’t simple enough.

With my lack of time, I’ve been subscribing to websites’ RSS feeds (with the hope to stay updated), but boy, do I check ‘em? Hell no! I haven’t got the time to do that either!

Oh me oh my oh.

What can I do?

So I’m currently on the look out for some amazing tools to house my really salty slugs. Any suggestions? I’m open to anything, honestly!

Or generally a good way to stay in contact with mega-cool websites when life is just too full and plentiful with other things?

My little lions, comment away… I’m waiting!

:P

P.S. Whaddya think about the whole Wednesday Weevils thing?

But don’t forget, Mari sucks at updating regularly for stoopidity on saturday, so…don’t be scatterbrained like Mari! Keep Wednesday Weevils going!

Yes, you no longer have to visit them…but if your normal computer is slow like Mari’s…it’s just as fast to using any RSS reader. They all use AJAX and it slows down Mari’s craputer to a crawl.

Mari forgets to check her favorites too. Mari usually gets super-nice comments from them and is like “WHOOPS! Haven’t visited you in two weeks! Ehehehe…”

Mari suggests finding out if a reader uses AJAX and whether your computer can handle it. Mari keeps hearing about how Scoble can handle 600 feeds a day with Google Reader, but Mari can’t do nearly as many because her computer’s so slow. *grumpy fold of the arms* Harumph!

Mari has found the only way to stay in touch with the web is to stop having a life outside it. XD

Thank-you for the comment on my website, and I will definitely get to adding a comments template into my tutorial pages. You are right — it’s more convenient.

I should really add an RSS feed link to my website. Wordpress comes with it, but I removed it for some silly reason, haha.

And Wednesday Weevils sounds like a grand idea! Good luck with it. :)

    @ Mari

Well Stoopid Saturday’s can’t be stoopid if there is no stoopidity involved!

Hmm my site uses AJAX for adding comments… does it affect your computer at all?

I think mine is ok with AJAX – for now!

*Considers no life outside the web…*

Even if I did want that, it is actually impossible to achieve that right now! *sigh*

There needs to be more than 24 hours in a day!

  4. Emz / Aug 23 2007

    @ Lisa

No problemo! It really is a good idea to have comments, then you can help people beyond just the tutorial! Hope it all goes well!

You should still have your RSS feed being ‘fed’, so you just need to find the link for it and display that baby!

I’m wondering if I should have called it Weevil Wednesday’s now… oh dear! What do you think?

  5. Joana / Aug 23 2007

Wednesday Weevils sounds just fine to me Emz. ^_^ Woohoo, this sounds like something fun. Just don’t be like me and forget to make a special post occasionally. ^^; I can be so bad.

I forget to check on some of my favorites too, I tried the whole RSS thing but really that doesn’t do me much good when I’m forgetting anyway. lol Lack of time, yeah, forgetfulness not so much.

    @Emz

    XD Emz is hilarious.

As a matter of fact, it does. But since it’s only the comments, it’s not as bad as Netvibes.

There does need to be more than 24 hours in a day!

    @ Joana

    I really hope I don’t forget to make a post next Wednesday… I shouldn’t do, because generally mid-week I am in a blogging mood.

Provided I have a weevil to talk about though!

Oh yeah… I kinda stole the idea of having reply comments emailed to the original commenter.

It just rawks! I installed it after this post so couldn’t announce it.

I think I just really really need to push to visit sites rather than rely on really salty slugs… gah…

Like, I haven’t visited your’s or Mari’s for ages now! GAH!

  8. Emz / Aug 23 2007

    @ Mari
    :)

Ah, I’m glad it doesn’t cause too much of a problem – I was slighty worried there!

I’m just someone that is too impatient for the page to reload!

    What’s Netvibes?

Hmm, how do we go about getting more than 24 hours in a day? Any ideas?

  9. Meg / Aug 24 2007

RSS is definitely a wonderful thing that i need to get myself more involved in!

  10. Exene / Aug 24 2007

Why don’t I think of these day blog things! Gahhh it would’ve been so much easier for me then working on separate blogs. Yeah I do realize that bookmarking is very important bu t I don’t use it myself.

  11. Sean / Aug 25 2007

Wednesday Weevils huh? I like it. Maybe you could make it its own section, or meme.

By the way, Emz, where did you steal that plugin idea from? Mari’s been looking for it. XDDDD Mari’s too stupid to find where to poach Joana’s plugins.

  14. Frutee / Aug 26 2007

The plugin is Comment Email Responder. I loved it on Joana’s site so went a googling and found a plugin to do the job! Woo!

    @ myself

AJAX dear. It’s gone KaaaPooooofy. Probably because of the gravatars (for some reason). Poop.

    But it’s not essential anyway.

Haha, Wednesday Weevils sound funny, but it’s pretty creative, yeah.

RSS is scary, but then it’s not something I really care about, so oh well…

    Great site :)

Why is RSS scary? *laughs* Most blog platforms do everything you need for you to never have to worry about RSS itself and still be able to offer it to your visitors.
    :)

I’m glad you like my site. I rather like it too!
    :P

Wednesday Weevils, lol sounds interesting :P I wish I was more creative. I could never come up with something like that.
