Hosting
Updated: May 5, 2008Below is a question and answer format, that I hope answers your queries/fulfills your curiosity.
- Hey, you used to offer hosting @ http://hosting.oceanus-anima.com now it just redirects me to here?!
Yes, you are entirely right. However, that sub domain is no longer in use. Neither is the email address (hosting@this domain).
- So, are you no longer offering hosting?
No. Mainly because a majority of the people I took on didn’t do anything with their accounts. Although I take some blame for being too lenient with my rules. I also don’t have the time I thought I had to be able to support people like I would want to be able to.
This is not necessarily permanent. I still want to host people because I have tons of space and bandwidth that I’ll never use, but I don’t think it’s fair to offer hosting if I can’t be fully supportive like a hostee might require (advice on FTP, HTML, CSS, PHP, etc).
- Grr! I’m supposed to be a hostee; sent you an email at the hosting email address, but never heard back from you!
My apologies, after November (2007) life went a little haywire. Plus my email accounts all got spammed to death, so I literally can no longer check them. Please use englishocean at gmail.com to contact me.
- Grr! I am a hostee, what does this mean for me?
Providing you are using your site, nothing has changed. Continue to use it! If you are not, over the next couple of weeks I will be redirecting sub domains to here, and suspending FTP accounts. Please contact me if you want it back.
- Oh man! I really want to be hosted!
Sucks to be you! *kiddin’*. If you are well and truly desperate to have a sub domain here, and crave unlimited bandwidth and web space usage AND you will need limited support (you know FTP, HTML, CSS) then… maybe, just maybe I can help you.
However, it depends entirely on you. If you are really interested, just drop me a line at englishocean at gmail.com and we’ll have a chat ’bout things.
- I bought a domain, but can’t afford the hosting. :’(
Intriguing. I may be able to help, but what is said directly above this still stands. Email me, baby! (Unlimited sub domains, FTP users, mysql databases, one-click installs including WordPress… but no control panel - I do all the setting up).
Exceptions
The following exceptions exist:
- You are a friend.
- You are a friend who is desperate to have a website due to whatever reasons (losing current host, can’t afford own bill anymore etc).
- You are a fabulous person I admire.
- You are a poofy lion.
- You love cats as much as I do and want to make a cat (related) website.
- You are making a site related to (any/all) marine sciences (and/or climate change).
- You would consider helping out with the annual hosting bill ($10-$20 from you maximum would help with my $120 bill). I don’t want to charge for hosting, but obviously if you can help, why would I not offer you a site?! *laughs*. This would not pay for a domain registration, mind you. Well, $20 would, $9.95 for domain, the rest for hosting.
- You need file sponsoring. Read below.
File Sponsoring
I have never done file sponsoring before, but have always wanted to. This is where all you need is an FTP account, some space and bandwidth. All files are linked from your own site, whereby you currently don’t have enough of your own space/bandwidth to use.
I am willing to sponsor any site such as design sites, photoblogs, fan sites, forums/message boards, galleries… generally anything that might take a lot of space/bandwidth. Or not.
Have a host you love, but not enough space/bandwidth? Same applies.
If you are interested, please email me, saying what you want the space for, and how much space/bandwidth you think you might need approximately. Don’t say a small number if it’s not true! You need 10gigs of space? 100+ gigs of bandwidth? Just say it honestly! Then we can discuss if it will work or not.
I’m more interested in file sponsoring than hosting because there’s less for me to do/worry about! All you gotta do is upload, and link - simple!
At the end of the day…
Just email me. I’m a nice person, admittedly with not a huge amount of time for (other) people, but my inbox is always open and checked.
